Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch heart-shaped cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Gradually add this to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.
- Add red food coloring a little at a time, stirring until the desired pink hue is reached.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Once cooled, frost with cream cheese or buttercream frosting.
