- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon orange zest

- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons orange juice
- Additional orange zest for frosting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the buttermilk, vanilla extract, and orange zest until fully combined.
- Combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in another bowl.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes completely on wire racks.
- Beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until incorporated.
- Mix in the orange juice and remaining orange zest.
- Frost the top of one cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing and flavor. Fresh orange juice and zest yield the best results.
