Description
A beautifully braided loaf with a slightly sweet flavor, beloved in Jewish culture.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 package active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 1 egg for egg wash
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with a pinch of sugar and let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs and vegetable oil until smooth. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and the egg mixture to the flour mixture. Stir until combined.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 10 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each into a long rope and braid together.
- Place the braided dough on a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30-60 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the loaf with the beaten egg.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let it cool before slicing.
